New Utility Tree Trimmer technical diploma coming to Mid-State
A new Utility Tree Trimmer technical diploma program will soon be available at Mid-State Technical College. Applications are now being accepted for the 16-credit program.
Mid-State’s Utility Tree Trimmer program is a one-year technical diploma embedded in the Arborist Technician associate of applied science (AAS). Students are prepared to perform maintenance of critical utility infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted services. It’s important, hands-on work and a rewarding career choice for those who love the outdoors.
“I am genuinely pleased to learn about the introduction of Mid-State's new Utility Tree Trimmer program,” said Tim Walsh, vice president of health and safety at The Davey Tree Expert Company. “The program's emphasis on practical training ensures that graduates are not just theoretically knowledgeable but also hands-on proficient, reducing the need for extensive on-the-job training. This can translate to increased operational efficiency, reduced training costs and a quicker integration of new hires into our business processes.”
Students in the program are trained in introductory electrical awareness and safety, electrical hardware identification, tree pruning, chainsaw use, climbing and related aerial tree work, tree identification, pesticide handling and application and tree biology. The programs also includes hands-on exploration and learning, and many classes are outdoors. A unique aerial component ensures students gain experience while working safely in trees. Teamwork and crew leadership are also emphasized.
According to Dr. Alex Lendved, dean of Marshfield Campus and School of Applied Technology, Mid-State was able to draw on existing technology, equipment and expertise within the Arborist Technician degree to develop the new program. “When local industry asked for this program, we heard the need and were thrilled to be able to act quickly to bring it to fruition,” she said. “It’s a win-win for students and industry.”
