Mid-State Technical College is now offering a Jail Officer Academy program to prepare learners for positions as corrections officers in county jails. The 200-hour program is accredited by the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) and fulfills state certification requirements.

Students in the Jail Officer Academy work with modern correctional facility equipment in a simulated jail environment. Through training and simulations, students practice subject control, professional communications, officer wellness, jail safety and more. Upon hire and within two years of successful completion of the program, they are eligible for certification as a jail officer with the Wisconsin DOJ, Law Enforcement Standards Board.

“The Jail Officer Academy is a transformative opportunity for both current and aspiring correctional officers to develop the critical knowledge and hands-on skills needed for a fulfilling career in corrections," said Melissa Simcakowski, jail administrator with the Adams County Sheriff's Office. "In a field that is constantly evolving, there is nothing more empowering than earning a college credential under the guidance of professionals who are deeply experienced in our profession.”

According to Rick Anderson, Mid-State dean of the School of Public Safety, the program formalizes the jail academy training the College has traditionally provided to students. “In addition to providing transcripted credit, the students will now earn a technical diploma and will be able to show that credential on their résumé,” he said.
