First-Generation College Celebration Day
Every year on November 8th, we observe First-Generation College Celebration Day. A first-generation student is the first in their immediate family to attend college or pursue a higher education degree. Forty-four percent of Mid-State students are first-generation.

In honor of First-Generation College Celebration Day, Mid-State is bringing awareness to the unique experiences of first-generation students!
Are You a First-Generation College Student?

Advice From First-Generation Students
Mid-State students and employees share insights from their experiences as first-generation students.
- "Don't be afraid to ask questions. Find at least one staff member you are comfortable talking to."
- "Get help. If you are struggling academically or emotionally, please reach out to your instructors, your advisor, a tutor, a friend...someone. No shame. We've all needed help from time to time."
- "Don't let the negative attitudes of friends and family get in your head. Just because they don't see the value in what you are doing or because it wasn't right for them, doesn't mean anything. YOU are responsible for your future earning potential and job satisfaction."
- "Calculate the cost of a single day in your college life (tuition, transportation, etc.). When you are tempted to skip class or blow off an assignment, ask yourself, 'Can I afford to waste $142 today?' Day one might not hurt, but by the third time you miss a class, you've spent the total of a car payment with nothing to show for it."
