Admissions Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply to a program?
There are five main admissions steps for MSTC programs:
(1) complete an online Application for Admission
(2) submit a $30 non-refundable application fee payable to MSTC
(3) submit an official copy of all academic transcripts, including high school or HSED/GED scores and college or university
(4) complete an Accuplacer entrance exam (You may not be required to take this test if you are a transfer student with acceptable grades or have met satisfactory scores on other college entrance tests such as the ACT.)
(5) apply for Financial Aid and Scholarships.

Certain MSTC programs have additional admission requirements. Refer to the program page on the website or in the MSTC Catalog & Student Handbook.

Is there an Application for Admission deadline?
MSTC continuously accepts applications for admission. However, in order to ensure adequate time to process your application and for you to complete the admissions requirements, we have set July 1 for a Fall term start and November 1 for a Spring term start as a guideline for applying. However, students must complete the application process for the Fall term no later than November 1 and for the Spring term no later than March 1.  Students who fail to complete the application process for their program by the end of business day on those dates will be admitted to a program for the next available term.

Do I need to take an entrance assessment to be admitted to MSTC and my program?
MSTC requires most new students to complete the Accuplacer prior to entrance into a program (see Waiver  if you have taken another test and believe that will qualify for entrance). The Accuplacer measures reading, language, and math skills through a series of multiple-choice questions presented on the computer. Accuplacer is not timed, but usually takes about 2 hours to complete.

If I’ve taken the Accuplacer in the past, can MSTC use those scores?
Yes. The scores can be used if the Accuplacer (or equivalent entrance assessment) has been taken within the last three years.

Is there a fee to take the Accuplacer?
Yes. There is a $10 fee to take the Accuplacer.

When can I take the Accuplacer?
The Accuplacer is offered on a daily basis. To schedule a time to take the Accuplacer, call the campus location that is most convenient for you.

I applied to MSTC in the past. Do I need to repay my application fee?
The $30 application fee is a one-time fee. Therefore, if you have already paid your application fee, you do not need to pay it again.

I previously paid a $30 application fee to another Wisconsin Technical college. Do I need to pay it again?
Yes. An application fee needs to be paid to each technical college you apply to.

MSTC needs a copy of my transcripts. Can I just send a copy of the one I have?
No. MSTC requires all transcripts to be OFFICIAL. In order for it to be considered official, it needs to be sent to MSTC in an envelope sealed by your school.

I graduated from high school several years ago. Does MSTC still need my high school transcript?
Yes. Transcripts are required for admission to the college. Contact your high school and have them send the transcript directly to MSTC. If your name has changed since graduation, be sure to remind your school to write your new name on your transcript.

Do I need to be admitted to a program to take classes at MSTC?
No. Anyone can register for most General Studies classes. However, if it is your intention to complete a program, it is to your benefit to submit an Application for Admission as soon as possible. (Some program classes may require program admission for registration.)

How do I know if I’ve been admitted to a program?
Once you have completed all admissions requirements, you will receive a letter indicating you have been accepted. (Please allow 15 business days for processing.)

I’ve already taken some of my General Education classes at another college. Will they transfer to my program at MSTC?
Contact your college and have them send an OFFICIAL copy of your transcript to MSTC. Once they have arrived, schedule an appointment with your program counselor for transcript review.

When can I register for classes?
Once you have been admitted to your program, you will receive information regarding Smart Start sessions (orientation, advising and registration). At the Smart Start session, you will have an opportunity to meet with an advisor and register for classes.

Will a GED (General Educational Development) or HSED (High School Equivalency Diploma) be accepted in lieu of a high school diploma?
Yes. Contact the institution that awarded your GED/HSED and have them send your test scores directly to MSTC. If your name has changed since securing your GED/HSED, be sure to remind your school to write your new name on your scores.

I do not have a GED or HSED. Can MSTC help me get a GED/HSED?
Yes. MSTC can help you earn a GED or HSED. Click here for more information.
